Die spanische Architektin und Designerin Patricia Urquiola wurde 1961 in Oviedo geboren. Sie studierte an der Polytechnischen Universität in Mailand und an der Technischen Universität in Madrid und machte 1989 ihren Abschluss. Zwischen 1990 und 1996 war sie als Assistentin von Achille Castiglioni und Eugenio Bettinelli an der Polytechnischen Universität in Mailand und der E.N.S.C.I. in Paris tätig. In dieser Zeit arbeitete sie auch in der Produktentwicklung bei De Padova. Hier entwarf sie unter anderem die beliebten Flower und Loom Sofas mit Vico Magistretti.
Anschließend wurde Urquiola Leiterin der Lissoni Associates Designgruppe. Zu ihren Kunden für Haushaltswaren und Möbel zählten Alessi, Flos, Cappellini, Cassina und Kartell. In 2001 schloss sie sich mit Martino Berghinz zusammen, um ihr eigenes Studio in Mailand zu eröffnen. Dort lebt und arbeitet sie auch heute.
Urquiolas Design vereint klare moderne Ästhetik mit traditionellem spanischem und italienischem Handwerk (oftmals Textilhandwerk). Um ihren Entwürfen eine persönliche Note zu verleihen, baut sie in ihrem Werk verschiedenste kulturelle Elemente mit ein. Foscarini, Cappellini und B&B zählen zu ihren Kunden aus dem Produktdesign. Bekannte Projekte sind der Fjord Stuhl für Moroso (2002), die gewebten Flo Stühle für Driade (2004) und ihr Crochet Teppich für Paola Lenti (2005). Urquiolas Arbeiten konzentrieren sich hauptsächlich auf Projekte im Bereich Architektur und Design, als auch auf Ausstellungskonzepte.
