1927 in Paris geboren, studierte der französische Designer Pierre Paulin in den frühen 1950er Jahren Steinmetz und Tonmodellierung an der École Camondo in Paris. Am ehesten bekannt geworden ist er vermutlich durch seine Zusammenarbeit mit Artifort, die 1958 begann und beinahe ein halbes Jahrhundert andauern sollte. Durch diese Verbindung entstanden diverse ikonische Stücke, wie sein berühmter Mushroom Chair (1959), Ribbon Chair (1966) und der Tongue Chair (1968). Bemerkenswert war auch, dass ihn 1970 Le Mobilier National damit beauftragte, die privaten Wohnräume von Präsident George Pompidou im Palais de L'Elysee auszustatten sowie auch das Büro von Francois Mitterand im Jahr 1983. Paulins Arbeit wurde durch seine deutschen Wurzeln, durch die frühen Modernisten und insbesondere durch die amerikanischen Designer Charles & Ray Eames beeinflusst. Seine Stücke sind Teil von Dauerausstellung verschiedenster angesehener Einrichtungen, wie dem Museum of Modern Art in New York, dem Musée des Arts Decoratifs und dem Centre George Pompidou in Paris, der National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne und dem Museum of Applied Arts in Wien. Paulin verstarb 2009 in Montpelier, Frankreich.
