Industriedesigner und Architekt Hans Olsen wurde 1919 in Dänemark geboren. Er arbeitete zunächst als Tischler, doch entschied er sich im Alter von 30 Jahren zur Königlich Dänischen Kunstakademie (Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi) zu gehen, um bei dem hochangesehenen Architekten und Designer Kaare Klint (1888 - 1954) von 1941 bis 1943 Architektur zu studieren. Unter Klint konzentrierte Olsen sich auf die Prinzipien von Ergonomie und Anthropometrie (die Lehre der menschlichen Körpermaße) und übte sich gleichzeitig in Materialtechnik und traditionellem Handwerk.
Während viele seiner dänischen Zeitgenossen - wie Arne Jacobsen, Poul Kjærholm, Børge Mogensen und Hans Wegner - der modernistischen „Klint School” anhingen, war Olsen besonders darauf aus, mit Design und Materialien zu experimentieren, um zu höchstmöglichem Komfort zu gelangen. Olsen war sehr von laminiertem Bugholz angetan und hatte daher viel Freiheit in der Form seiner massiven oder leichten Designs.
1953 eröffnete Olsen sein eigenes Studio und präsentierte von da an seine Möbel auf der jährlichen Ausstellung der Tischlerzunft in Kopenhagen. Danach arbeitete er mit vielen dänischen Herstellern, wie Bramin Møbel, C/S Furniture, Frem Røjle, Juul Kristensen, N. A. Jørgensen und Verner Birksholm, zusammen.
Olsens erstes erfolgreiches Design war das Roundette Dining Set (1952) für Frem Røjle Møbelfabrik. Dieses kompakte Design aus Teak und Leder war mit seinen nahtlos unter den Tisch passenden Stuhllehnen ein großer Erfolg in Form und Funktion. Weitere bemerkenswerte Stücke Olsens sind der Shell Chair (1955), der Easy Chair (1955), der Fried Egg Chair (1956), die modulare TV-bench (1956), die CS500 Series (1962), der Model 532A Rocking Chair (1956) und der Bikini Chair (1968), der aufgrund seiner futuristischen Form mittlerweile ein Kultstück ist. Olsens Frederik the 9th Chair von 1964, benannt nach dem dänischen König Frederik VII, der wohl am liebsten rücklings saß, gewann 1965 die A.I.D Goldmedaille.
Olsen verstarb im Jahr 1992. Obwohl er weniger bekannt ist als seine dänischen modernistischen Zeitgenossen, haben seine erfolgreiche Karriere und seine unverwechselbaren Designs in den letzten Jahren wieder das Interesse von Designliebhabern auf sich gezogen.
